Organisational Development (OD): In what ways can a coach influence change in an organisation?

This paper explains how the ideas and practices of Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), originally created by Insoo Kim Berg & Steve de Shazer, can be used in executive coaching to influence change in organisational life.

The roots of Insoo Kim Berg’s and Steve de Shazer’s thinking were influenced by Watzlawick (Watzlawick et al, 1974) who was interested in the differences between what he called “first order” incremental change in organisational life and “second order” change ‘where organisational paradigms, norms, ideologies or values are transformed in some fundamental ways’.  As an executive coach, one is always aiming to achieve ‘second order’ change.
